השאלה על השתתפות בצער, והשאלה אם לשמוח, הם שאלות שונות לחלוטין.
גם אם איראן לא הייתה מדינה עויינת, הריחוק של המקום, וההיחשפות לאלו שמתו רק משעת מיתתם, מקשה על הזדהות. אולי בגדר סיפור שלא היה ולא נברא.
כמה אנשים לדעתכם בוכים מסיפורי אצבע?

לגבי שמחה, רחוקה הסיבה. אזרחי איראן אינם אויבנו. אך מצד תחושת הממשל שהיא נפגעה מעוצמתה וכל אפקט אחר, יש בהחלט על מה לשמוח

From today's New York Times:
…..At Bam's cemetery, where thousands have already been buried, workers dug 130-foot trenches for corpses wrapped in white shrouds. One woman sat alone pounding the ground with her fist.
''I was a good Muslim. I prayed to God all the time,'' sobbed 44-year-old Alma Sepehr, beside a grave holding the remains of 21 relatives including her daughter, son and husband. ''Why did this happen to us?''
…….Elsewhere, Akbar Hesomi, 55, sat on a pile of rubble and watched Iranian rescuers search for four of his relatives with bare hands and shovels in the ruins of what used to be a four-story building.

The above quotations are meant to underscore the human aspect of this tragedy, since a tragedy of such major proportions tends to lessen our human response from the individualistic perspective. It also shows the basic universal quest for understanding the divine hand in such matters.

I also wanted to point out something that I realized on many occasion before. There were many clusters in here dealing with issues of how we view our Muslim enemies, be it on the battlefield, or in their personal lives. In each of these clusters, there was an unmistaken quest to try to come to terms on how to reconcile our animosity towards our enemies with our sensibility towards their human and political rights. There was even a concerted effort here to try to understand the mindset of suicide bombers.
I once watched an episode on the PBS TV channel, dealing with the Palestinian issue. The main Palestinian character in the episode was the late noted Palestinian intellectual Edward Said. While Said was very articulate in pointing out the Israeli acts of brutality, there wasn't a single instance of self-doubt or reprimand directed towards his own brothers and sisters.
I know that it's customary for those on the political and religious right to accuse those on the left as being self-haters, or even traitors. But on the other hand, doesn't all this show that there is ingrained in the Jewish psyche a quest for justice and a deep-seated self-doubt about the way we treat others, even our worst enemies? Some may hate the politics of Sarid and Beilin, or the views of Amos Oz and A.B. Yhoshua, but where are the Muslim Yhoshuas and Burgs? Why don't we see the same intense debates we see here in Muslim intellectual circles?

אריה,
דבריך ריגשו אותי והחזירו אותי לתקופת שהותי בעיר "התפוח הגדול", בזמן התקפת הטרור המזעזעת בבנייני הסחר העולמי (מגדלי התאומים).
הזמן היה זמן אלול, ותחילתו של תהליך "העיכול" של הטרגדיה התגבשה במהלך הימים הנוראים. אחת התחושות החזקות שלי באותו זמן ובאותו מקום היתה ריקותו של תהליך האבל מכל סימן של בדיקה עצמית וחשבון נפש.
איני מנסה לטעון ח"ו שקורבנות צריכים להאשים עצמם בקורבנותם, אבל תהליך של בדיקה ובחינה עצמית, חשבון נפש ו"ניצול" של כאב למען תיקון אישי וכללי, נראו (ועדיין נראים) לי כעקרון בסיסי והכרחי בעולם הערכים היהודי שלי. סממנים כאלה נסתרו מעיני באותם הימים, והדבר לא רק שחרה לי ברמה אידיאולוגית ודתית, אלא גם נראה לי זר לחלוטין לזהותי היהודית.
יש אנשים שיראו בפן הזה של היהדות חולשה או מקור ל"גלותיות" (במובנה הנלעג, כפי שהוצגה ע"י הציונות בראשיתה) ולרפיסות. אני דווקא רואה בו בסיס איתן לבריאות נפשית של אדם ושל אומה, ומקור של כוח ומוסריות.
