Matisyahu
Reggae is not the type of rhythm that you would associate with your typical Jewish music. Its roots are generally more Jamaican. BUT…….., there's a new star in town., not necessarily the Jewish world a star in the secular world as well. His repertoire is mainly comprised of Jamaican style music, but believe it or not, it has a Jewish theme. The reason for that is that Matisyahu is a Lubavitcher Chasid. He has swept through the secular and Jewish music scene like a tornado wearing a bend down hat, a jacket, and tzitsis flying all over the place. His music is VERY interesting, but also a little unorthodox, if you are used to hearing MBD and Fried.
He sings songs with a reggae rhythm with a very distinctive flair. His songs are interesting his delivery is great. In general I think he is very good. It is a new fresh sound in Jewish music that is not imitating reggae,, this is the real thing.
I am at a loss for words (does not happen very often) at how to go about explaining him, it's actually a bit of a paradox. A style of music that is usually associated with a very different crowd, is suddenly being performed by a VERY Jewish guy.
It's interesting,, what are your thoughts?
