If you have Windows XP Pro, or Windows Server, i would say use Remote Desktop that is installed with windows OS . If you have a VPN setup, then you don't need to open any ports on the firewall to use RDP, otherwise you need to NAT port 3389

If you dont have windows XP, there is a free tool clalled  VNC, it's free and it can be setup to Run as a Windows Service
