Maximum Stew and the great political trifecta
Nature hates a vacuum, the saying goes, and so do the people who work in courthouses. Because of the post-holiday vacuum of big news in the Orange County courts, Topic A burning up the ears of Your Skinhead Correspondent this week is the uncertain future of County Court Judge Stewart Rosenwasser, who sounds like he doesn't want to be a judge anymore.
Actually, he's sounded that way for about a month. People who know him predicted that he would let off some steam and get back on the bench this week. But yesterday, when asked if he plans to resign, Rosenwasser would only say, "I'm examining my options."
Which options?
"All of them."
Hey, if your professional life were starting to look like the movie "Groundhog Day," you might take a good, hard look at your options, too.
In 2004, the Montgomery Republican's bid for state Supreme Court was submerged in a blue Democratic tide that inundated the 9th Judicial District, which includes Orange and four other counties in the Hudson Valley.
In 2003, he pulled out of the race long before Election Day, because of intercounty political skirmishes.
Last year, Rosenwasser hit the trifecta, or maybe it hit him. On the day after Election Day, he was hanging on to one of four Supreme Court slots by a few hundred votes.
But then came a recount, courtroom maneuvering and other intrigue that dragged on until the election was finally certified on Dec. 16 - three days later than the infamous Florida presidential recount of 2000.
Of course, no one held a gavel to Rosenwasser's head and made him dive into that foul pool of Supreme Court politicking. But even if he wants to stay put in Goshen, he'll have to run again for County Court in 2009.
Maximum Stew might be maxed out on running for office.
