Eliot slips, skips one son's shiva for rebbe
Gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer got his signals mixed yesterday when he made a shiva call to only one of the feuding sons of late Satmar Grand Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum.
Spitzer's representatives said the state attorney general wasn't trying to slight Aron Teitelbaum - he just didn't realize the rabbi was in Brooklyn.
The political miscue came as Aron and Zalmen Teitelbaum are battling to succeed their father as spiritual leader of the 120,000-member Satmar sect.
The brothers held dueling sabbath services in Brooklyn this weekend that attracted thousands of followers.
Spitzer visited Zalmen Teitelbaum at his Williamsburg home yesterday.
But he didn't stop to see Aron, who is based in Orange County, but was at his own Williamsburg residence yesterday.
Sen. Chuck Schumer and City Controller William Thompson visited both brothers yesterday.
"Eliot paid his respects to the great work and leadership of the deceased grand rabbi," said Spitzer aide Ryan Toohey. "This was not a political event, and no greater meaning should be read into it."
Last night, Spitzer's representatives were scrambling to set up a shiva call to Aron Teitelbaum.
The shiva period of mourning for the late grand rebbe, who died last Monday, ends at 10 a.m. today.
Aron Teitelbaum, 58, head of the Satmar congregation in Kiryas Joel, Orange County, accepted the mantel of new grand rebbe last week, claiming he had the backing of 75% of the sect's members.
But Zalmen Teitelbaum, 53, also claimed to be the new grand rebbe, citing his father's will naming him successor to the post.

Spitzer visited Zalmen Teitelbaum at his Williamsburg home. But he didn't stop to see Aron, who is based in Orange County, but was at a Williamsburg residence as well.

Technically speaking, every religious organization belongs to the Attorney General, and he can technically have the last say. I wonder if this was intentional, and he is sending a message?

May 1, 2006 -- Eliot Spitzer seemed to snub one side of the simmering Satmar sect war by sitting shiva only with one of late Grand Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum's sons in Brooklyn yesterday.
A host of local politicos, including Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Anthony Weiner and Comptroller Bill Thompson, visited both brothers - Aaron and Zalman Teitelbaum - who are vying for their father's crown and control of the worldwide Satmar congregation.
But the Democrat attorney general and would-be governor visited only Williamsburg-based Zalman, seeming to pick sides in the religious rift.
Sources in Spitzer's camp said he simply thought Aaron was still in Orange County with his Kiryas Joel flock.

The problem was that he failed to call also on Aron Teitelbaum, Zalmen's older brother and rival for the Satmar throne.
The next day, New York City tabloids speculated about whether the attorney general and would-be governor had snubbed Aron.
After all, politicians such as Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Hillary Clinton had all taken pains to see both brothers and avoid alienating one faction within the bitterly divided Satmar community.

Spitzer representatives told the Daily News it was a harmless oversight: They thought Aron was at home in Kiryas Joel, rather than in Williamsburg, when Spitzer met with Zalmen. They were said to be trying to set up a separate meeting with Aron.
But some Aron supporters concluded that Spitzer's chief of staff, Richard Baum, who supported Kiryas Joel's anti-Aron dissidents a decade ago as Democratic minority leader of the Orange County Legislature, had steered his boss to Zalmen alone. Spitzer's office did not return a call for comment.
