The Marcy Avenue Armory, also known as the 47th Regiment Armory, is a historic National Guard armory located in the Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood. The armory, completed in 1884, was designed by architect William A. Mundell with an 1899 expansion by architect Isaac Perry that nearly tripled its size with the addition of a second drill shed. The building consists of 165,166 square feet situated on a 3.2 acre lot. It features a very large drill hall which is 59,000 square feet. The military fortress-like exterior is typical of late nineteenth century urban armory architecture. Its purpose was to not only provide a home for local militia activities, but to stand as a formidable stronghold against the perceived threats of social unrest during that era. Today, the armory's massive size opens its future to myriad possibilities, including film production, trade shows and conventions or indoor recreational/fitness facilities.
