Driver drags deputy 20 feet, sheriff says
A Sullivan County sheriff's deputy is recuperating from a back injury after being dragged 20 feet by a driver avoiding a parking ticket, Sheriff Dan Hogue said.
Sgt. Keith Molinari was one of four deputies on traffic control duty Saturday night into early Sunday on Route 42, at Ichud bungalows, formerly Ideal.
Ichud was hosting a gathering of about 6,000 Hasidim for the presentation of a new Torah for the synagogue. Sheriff's deputies and Monticello police were making sure traffic flowed smoothly.
By 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Hogue said, Ichud's parking lots were overflowing. Some people had parked on Route 42, a no-parking zone. Police began ticketing and towing cars.
Hogue said that as Molinari went to ticket one man's minivan, the man began to pull away from the curb. Hogue said Molinari stepped aside and ordered the man to stop. When he didn't, Molinari grabbed the van door handle. The driver kept going, and Molinari was dragged about 20 feet. The driver left.
Hogue said bystanders and other officers rushed to help Molinari, who was treated at the scene and taken by Hatzolah medics to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris and later released.
Police, with the help of the Hasidic community, are looking for the driver.
Rabbi Bernard Freilich, the state police liaison to the Hasidic community, said people, including the owners of Ichud, are very concerned about the incident. "They want to help," Freilich said.
"We're looking for witnesses, and we're looking for the man who did this to come forward," " Hogue said.
