Dozen folks attend meeting on village
Braving treacherous road conditions last night, about a dozen residents showed up to voice any potential objections to a petition seeking to create a village of South Blooming Grove.
More than 1,000 people in the southern part of the Town of Blooming Grove have signed a petition in favor of forming the new village, a trend sweeping through the southern part of Orange County in the wake of plans for the Hasidic Jewish community, the Village of Kiryas Joel, to one day expand beyond its current borders. Those who support village incorporation in South Blooming Grove say such a move would preserve their respective diversities and grant more control over zoning and land use.
The final decision to put the proposal up for a vote rests with Blooming Grove Supervisor Charles Bohan, who presided over last night's brief session at the South Blooming Grove Firehouse. Bohan said his office had not received any written, legal objections to the petition or challenging its validity prior to last nights public meeting.
Bohan said the next step is to draft a referendum to submit to the Orange County Board of Elections, which would set a date for a vote. Only those living within the borders of the proposed village would be eligible to vote.
