Two-car accident hurts four teens

Four teenagers were hurt around lunchtime yesterday in a two-vehicle accident on Route 306 in Monsey.
The most seriously injured was 16-year-old Simcha Davis of Chicago, the driver of a 1994 Plymouth Voyager, who was transported unconscious by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
His three passengers — Benjamin Kiss, 16, Eli Neumann, 17, and Yosef Jozefovic, 16, all of Monsey — were taken to Rockland's two hospitals.
Gerard Chiarella, 37, of Congers, the driver of the white 2003 International box truck involvedin the accident, refused treatment at the scene.
Ramapo police Sgt. Daniel Hyman said the accident, which happened at 12:40 p.m, was still being investigated late yesterday.
Hyman said the four boys, apparently students at a yeshiva in the area, were traveling on Parker Boulevard and were crossing or turning onto Route 306 when their car was hit by Chiarella, heading south on the state road.
Police said they were still investigating what direction the Voyager was traveling.
"The minivan wound up landing between two trees, so it was a pretty bad accident," Hyman said. "We're checking into whether the boys stopped at the stop sign coming from Parker. We're not sure if they were hit while they were going through the intersection."
With a stop sign on Parker, Hyman said, the southbound truck would have had the right of way.
"We did a commercial vehicle inspection on the truck and asked Clarkstown for a level one inspection as well," Hyman said, referring to a more in-depth review of the truck's brake lines and other mechanics. "There were no violations."
No tickets had been issued as of yesterday.
Hatzolah Ambulance had three ambulances at the scene and Ramapo Valley Ambulance had one. Rockland Paramedics and the Hillcrest Fire Department also responded.
Hyman said he didn't know what the truck was carrying, but that it was not considered to be a hazardous material. He said neither of the vehicles had caught fire.
Kiss was transported to Nyack Hospital, the other two injured passengers were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, Hyman said. Kiss seemed to be the most seriously injured of the three.
The weather and roads were dry at the time of the accident, Hyman said, and traffic was moderate.
There was heavy damage to the driver's side of the Voyager, he said. Chiarella pulled his truck off to the side of Route 306 after the two vehicles collided.
The state road was closed in that area until about 4 p.m., and police directed traffic to side roads around the accident scene.

Yeshiva Bochur Dies from Car Accident
2 die in weekend accidents

Two people involved in accidents over the weekend have died from their injuries.
Simcha Davis, 16, of Chicago, whose minivan, police said, was hit by a truck in Monsey on Friday while he was driving with three friends, died about 11 p.m. Friday. Ronald J. D'Argenio, 61, of Ringwood, N.J., whose motorcycle struck a house in Haverstraw Sunday afternoon, died Sunday night or early yesterday.
Both accidents are being investigated. Charges were not filed in either accident.
Ramapo police went to Route 306 in Monsey about noon Friday to find a 1994 Plymouth Voyager driven by Davis crashed near the intersection with Parker Boulevard. Davis, who was airlifted unconscious to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, had been driving three other boys, all of whom were identified by police as students at a nearby yeshiva.
Injured in the accident were Benjamin Kiss and Yosef Jozefovic, both 16, and Eli Neumann, 17, all of Monsey. Kiss was transported to Nyack Hospital; Jozefovic and Neumann were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
Police said Davis was driving on Parker Boulevard and was either crossing or turning onto Route 306 when the vehicle collided with a white 2003 International box truck driven by Gerard Chiarella, 37, of Congers.
The minivan was between two trees on the side of the road. Chiarella pulled his truck to the side of Route 306 after the accident. Police said the truck passed both a commercial vehicle and a more in-depth inspection immediately after the accident.
Investigators were checking whether the Voyager stopped at the stop sign at Parker. With a sign at that street, Chiarella would have had the right of way.
No autopsy was planned for Davis because of religious reasons, a spokesman for the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Haverstraw town police are investigating the accident that caused the death of D'Argenio, whose motorcycle slammed into a vacant home on Railroad Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Haverstraw Detective Charles Hatala said D'Argenio and a male friend were both riding motorcycles down Cosgrove Avenue and were preparing to make a right turn onto Railroad Avenue and had stopped to talk about getting back to Route 9W.
Witnesses said D'Argenio apparently opened the throttle too much and released the clutch too quickly and his bike shot across the street and into the house. The purple Honda had only 136 miles on it, Hatala said.
"It looks like it's just an unfortunate accident due to an inexperienced driver," Hatala said. D'Argenio did not have a motorcycle license and the motorcycle was not registered. He was wearing a helmet.
An autopsy was to be performed yesterday at the Westchester County medical examiner's office, Hatala said.
Family and burial information on both victims were unavailable.
