NY Prosecutor Charged With Leaving Accident Scene

Kevin Hynes, the son of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, was suspended as chief investigative counsel in the Westchester District Attorney's Office Friday after being charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He was issued the summons Thursday after voluntarily going to the North Castle police station and acknowledging he was the driver of a county-owned car that crashed into rocks and shrubs on Route 22.
When police found the 1997 Mercury at 6 a.m. Saturday, July 24, its air bags had deployed and there was damage to the front end on the passenger side. Sergeant Robert Ferrara said police could not find the driver and were having the car towed when Mr. Hynes called headquarters to tell them about the car. Later that day he admitted to having been the driver.
An empty beer bottle was found in the car, Sergeant Ferrara said, but it appears the only charge will be leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, a violation with a maximum penalty of 15 days in jail and a $250 fine.
In a statement Friday, District Attorney Hynes said he had been "informed of the facts by my son and I am satisfied he has done nothing wrong."
Putnam County District Attorney Kevin L. Wright has been appointed special prosecutor to handle the matter.
Kevin Hynes, who earns $128,752 in the Westchester office's No. 3 post, is scheduled to appear in North Castle Town Court tomorrow.
