Fatal crash near Ellenville
State Police at Ellenville are investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 52 in the Town of Wawarsing shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
Investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet suburban operated by Chaim Sabel, 19, of Brooklyn, was traveling eastbound on route 52 when Sabel said he saw a deer cross the road. During that time, he entered the westbound lane and was struck by a 2002 Ford Taurus driven by Nathan Shulman, 89, of Lauderdale Lake, FL. On impact, Shulman's vehicle entered the eastbound lane and struck the guide rail before coming to a rest. Sabel's vehicle came to rest in the westbound embankment.
Shulman was transported to Ellenville Regional Hospital and later flown to Westchester Medical Center with internal injuries. A passenger, Minnie Shulman, 87, of Lauderdale Lakes, FL, was transported to Ellenville Regional where she died from her injuries. Sabel was not injured in the crash.
The investigation is continuing with any charges pending the outcome of further interviews and the completion of an accident reconstruction by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
