Bus depot hearing postponed in Spring Valley

A hearing on a bus depot application that has drawn public ire in Spring Valley has been postponed until next month.
Monsey Trails wants to build a depot and offices on vacant land it owns through its 31 Commerce Street Corp. on the north side of Commerce Street at South Myrtle Avenue.
The land is zoned light industrial, and the company has sought a special permit from the Spring Valley village board.
Jeffrey Millman, the company's attorney, said the request for an adjournment was made because the hearing, scheduled for Tuesday, fell during important Jewish holidays.
"My clients are ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish men," Millman said yesterday. "This is the holiest time for them in the Jewish calendar."
Rosh Hashana began at sundown Sept. 15. Yom Kippur is Friday, and Sukkot is Sept. 29.
Millman said the adjournment request was not an attempt to stall for time.
"We are moving forward full steam ahead. We are anxious to have every aspect of this case heard," he said.
Bruce Levine, the village attorney, said Spring Valley had asked the company to notify residents in the area of the postponement.
The hearing is now scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Oct. 26, Levine said.
Mariel Farlow, chairwoman of the Spring Valley Concerned Citizens Coalition, said she did not mind the delay.
"That's fine," Farlow said.
The coalition has spearheaded strong opposition to the company's request, and its members have attended meetings of the village board and Zoning Board of Appeals to object.
The company also has made a separate application to the zoning board for an interpretation of Building Inspector Joe Jacaruso's March ruling that its current use of the land as a storage yard for junked vehicles was a violation of the village code.
The zoning board is expected to rule on that matter soon.
