Imam Says Man on Terror Tape Is Gadahn
Friday, October 29, 2004

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. - The director of California's Garden Grove Mosque where Adam Yahiye Gadahn , an American with suspected ties to Al Qaeda, converted to Islam told FOX News he believes the man threatening the United States on a mysterious videotape is Gadahn's.

A man wearing dark glasses and an Arab headdress wrapped around his face claims to be an American member of Al Qaeda and promises attacks that will make the streets of America "run red with blood" in a video aired Thursday night by FOX News.

Haitham Bundjaki, the Orange County imam who converted Gadahn to Islam and whom Gadahn later assaulted, told FOX outside his mosque on Friday that it sounds like Gadahn on the tape. Gadahn is a 25-year-old Southern Californian whom the FBI believes has possible ties to Al Qaeda

From the gestures and voice, Bundjaki told FOX, "I believe it was Adam."

Some U.S. officials had already speculated that the voice might belong to Gadahn, who also goes by the names Adam Pearlman and Abu Suhayb Al-Amriki. In May, the FBI announced that Gadahn had ties with senior Al Qaeda lieutenant Abu Zubaydah in Pakistan, and that he had attended terrorist training camps in Afghanistan and served as a translator for the terror network.

"The magnitude and ferocity of what is coming your way will make you forget all about September 11th,'' the man calling himself "Azzam the American'' says on the video. ''After decades of American tyranny and oppression, now it's your turn to die. Allah willing, the streets of America will run red with blood, matching drop for drop the blood of America's victims.''

According to a U.S. official, the tape was being shown to detainees to help identify the speaker.
A U.S. official told FOX News the tape is believed to be authentic. But the CIA says it has been unable to confirm the tape's authenticity and is analyzing it further.

The tape bears the logo of the As-Sahab Production Committee, which has produced previous Al Qaeda tapes.

FOX News obtained the videotape independently of ABC News, which also aired portions of the video Thursday night.

News broke Wednesday that ABC had the tape and had provided it to federal officials, but the network decided not to air it immediately because a preliminary CIA analysis was unable to determine if it was legitimate.

The tape was handed to the CIA and National Security Agency by ABC News three days ago, multiple government sources told FOX News. ABC is said to have received the tape last weekend from a terrorist source in Waziristan, a region in Pakistan near the Afghan border where the Taliban and Al Qaeda are believed to be holed up.

"We cannot verify the authenticity of this tape," one official said after the preliminary technical analysis presented inconclusive results. One source said the verification process had been complicated because the tape is a copy, not an original.

In the 75-minute message, the speaker praises the Sept. 11 attacks, calls Usama bin Laden and his deputy his leaders, and says a new wave of attacks could come at any moment.

The speaker claims the United States is his country of origin but does not say specifically where he lives. He speaks both Arabic and English with an international accent that is hard to characterize, an intelligence official said.

"The video content is classic Al Qaeda propaganda, in terms of anti-U.S. ideology and denunciation of the U.S.," a U.S. official told The Associated Press.

The official also said the video appears to have been made in the last several months, perhaps as recently as late summer, because of references to the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, and the Sept. 11 commission.

FOX News has learned the FBI will send the tape to its field offices as early as Friday, hoping agents can press their sources for information about the video's origin and "Azzam the American."

'Azzam the American' Threatens U.S.
Friday, October 29, 2004

WASHINGTON — A man wearing dark glasses and an Arab headdress wrapped around his face claims to be an American member of Al Qaeda (search) and promises attacks that will make the streets of America "run red with blood" in a video aired Thursday night by FOX News.

"The magnitude and ferocity of what is coming your way will make you forget all about September 11th. ... After decades of American tyranny and oppression, now it's your turn to die. CIA analyzes video of attack threat
Wed October 27, 2004 09:10 PM ET

By Steve Gorman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - ABC News has asked U.S. security officials to examine a videotape it obtained in Pakistan of an English-speaking man threatening a massive attack on the United States, the network says.

Sources familiar with the tape -- the authenticity of which U.S. intelligence officials have not been unable to verify -- said the man, who claims to be a U.S. native and al Qaeda supporter, warns that the "streets will run with blood."

The video appears to have been made as recently as late summer because the speaker discusses the Darfur conflict in Sudan, makes a reference to the Massachusetts same-sex marriage legislation and mentions the September 11 Commission, one U.S. intelligence official told Reuters on Wednesday.

ABC News vice president Jeffrey Schneider said the network has not shown the video because its authenticity has not been verified by either independent analysts or government experts.

"We have worked with the CIA and the FBI, neither of whom have authenticated the tape," he told Reuters. "Obviously, it would be beyond irresponsible to broadcast this tape without first authenticating it."

The first disclosure of the tape by Internet columnist Matt Drudge prompted ABC to publicly acknowledge the video's existence before knowing whether it was real or fake.

Schneider said the tape was obtained from a source in Pakistan over the weekend and arrived in New York on Monday, where it was first viewed by network officials.

Asked about the tape at a campaign stop with President George W. Bush in Ohio, White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters, "The intelligence community is analyzing it, working to verify its authenticity."

A source familiar with the tape told Reuters the hourlong video features a man, whose face is concealed by a headdress, warning that a coming attack on the United States would dwarf the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.

According to the source, the man says, "The streets will run with blood" and says the United States has brought this on itself for electing a president who has declared war on Islam by attacking the former Taliban rulers in Afghanistan and waging war against al Qaeda.

The source said linguistic experts believe the man, who identifies himself as "Assam the American," learned English at a young age but is not a native English speaker.

A U.S. intelligence official said the man claims to be originally from America and speaks fluent English with a slight accent. "We don't have a positive ID of the speaker, who was shrouded and wearing dark glasses," the official said. "The intelligence community does not have information linking the video to a specific threat."

The official said the tape was "classic al Qaeda propaganda," but seems to have been "sliced and diced." The speaker refers to al Qaeda leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri as "our leaders" and praises the September 11 attacks.

Sharing information like this with the government carries risks for a news organization, said media analyst Andrew Tyndall.

"If...as a result of sending this tape to the government, the CIA tipped off the Pakistani internal intelligence service, and they rounded this guy up, (ABC's) news-gathering ability would be compromised because you'd be perceived by the people on the streets of Karachi as being a front organization for the

CIA."

Schneider said ABC had been consulting with experts of its own as well as with U.S. officials. "We went to a number of sources in an attempt to authenticate (the tape) and in this case, those sources include government sources," he said.
