Grant will aid minority businesses
The Honolulu Minority Business Development Center received a $490,000 two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to help Honolulu's minority-owned businesses.
The center is part of the University of Hawaii's Pacific Business Center, which offers business-management services and consulting for minority clients looking to finance new businesses and expand current companies.
Services include:
Researching capital sources, sales opportunities and new products and services;
Developing a database of market and funding information and resources;
Matching minority owners with new markets and capital sources;
Assisting in contract negotiations, sales contracts and financial planning.
The center will be housed at the College of Business and the college's faculty and MBA students will help business owners. It addition, it has joined with the business community to provide financial, informational and market resources.
Low hourly fees are charged for services, starting at $10 per hour. Minority entrepreneurs eligible for services include the Asian Pacific Americans, African-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Spanish-speaking Americans, Aleuts, Asian Indians, Native Americans, Eskimos and Hasidic Jews.
