New Square family evicted

NEW SQUARE — For the first time in the village's history, an outside company has bought a house and evicted its tenants, creating anxiety among members of the insular Hasidic Jewish community.
And village leaders said yesterday that they will try to buy the three-family house at 9 Eisenhower Ave., a residential street with other multiple-family houses in the Ramapo community off Route 45.
Wednesday's eviction sparked an impromptu demonstration by dozens of residents outside the house. Ramapo police officers spent the night guarding the house after officers found several front windows broken by rocks and the water turned on inside.
The owner, Galaxy Assets Corp. of Manhattan, obtained the deed and $420,000 mortgage on the yellow, vinyl-sided building in February from an affiliated company. A New Square resident lost the house in a foreclosure for not making mortgage payments.
A Galaxy representative said yesterday that the company was willing to negotiate the sale of the house back to the community. He declined to give his full name or discuss how much Galaxy paid for the house or its asking price. The company's lawyer, Alan Katz of White Plains, did not return a call for comment.
New Square's deputy mayor, Israel Spitzer, said yesterday that village leaders would meet with the company's representative.
"I was informed he was willing to sit down with community leaders and work out the best deal for all parties involved," Spitzer said. "We're hoping the leadership will do anything possible to buy the house at a fair price from the seller."
Residents standing outside or walking by the house yesterday declined comment. Paper boxes filled with personal items, some clothes, a metal cabinet and other household items littered the front lawn.
One family was evicted Wednesday under a January order signed by Ramapo Justice Arnold Etelson. Two other families had left before the eviction notice.
Spitzer said community residents were angered by the purchase, the eviction and the potential of noncommunity members moving into the village, which was formed in 1961. The 2000 census placed New Square's population at about 4,600.
"It's a terrible situation for the families," Spitzer said. "The family evicted has a disabled child in a wheelchair. People were very offended by this eviction and purchase.
"The owner does this for a living," Spitzer said. "He buys bad loans and foreclosures and tries to walk away with a profit. The community's leadership understands this is business."
Spitzer said this was the first time an outside company has bought foreclosed property in New Square and evicted tenants.
"This is our first experience like this, and hopefully, our last," Spitzer said. "It's an uncomfortable situation."
New Square became Rockland's first Hasidic Jewish village in 1961. The Skver Hasidim originated in Ukraine centuries ago, came to the United States after World War II and the Holocaust, and settled in Brooklyn.
They were led from Europe by Grand Rebbe Jacob Joseph Twersky, the dynastic leader of the worldwide Skver Hasidim. In 1954, the rabbi sent community members to settle a 13-acre area that is now New Square.
All New Square streets are named after U.S. presidents, with the exception of a road named after former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
The Eisenhower Avenue house was owned by Elieser Friedman, who took out a mortgage in November 2001, according to documents filed with the County Clerk's Office in New City.
The house was obtained by a company named GRP/Ag Reo 2004-1 LLC through a foreclosure approved in state Supreme Court. GRP then deeded the mortgage to Galaxy.
Wednesday's eviction was overseen by the Sheriff's Department Civil Division. Civil Division Chief Mary Barbara said yesterday that the eviction was routine.
After the eviction, Ramapo police were confronted with some mischief at the house and an attempt to remove the officers watching the building, Detective Sgt. John Lynch said.
The department received 911 calls indicating a shooting, a suicidal person and a fight in the village, Lynch said, adding that other officers responded to the calls.
"All the calls were unfounded," Lynch said. "We received information the calls were an attempt to have the officers leave the house."

Why do you say so, why didn't anyone in the leadership try to help this guy before the bank took action, why wasn't he responsible to ask for help before it got out of hand, its the easiest think to blame the police its always their fold, they have to do what they have swearn to do and that's to protect everyone, even someone that doesn't go to the Rabbis Tish or dosn't belong to this community and even you.
