A tow-hold for illegal parkers
Parking ticket scofflaws will get a little leeway under a bill approved yesterday by the City Council. Currently, scofflaws risk having their cars towed on sight to a pound if they have racked up $230 in unpaid fines.
The towing threshold will be raised to $350 under the Council measure, which is expected to be signed into law by Mayor Bloomberg.
The city hiked the $55 fine for illegal parking to $105 in October 2003 and added a $10 state surcharge the next month. But the $230 towing threshold was never increased, meaning that it took fewer tickets to put someone on the scofflaw list.
The voter-friendly bill raising the towing threshold was credited to Councilman Erik Dilan (D-Brooklyn).
"I'm sorry I didn't think of it first," said Councilman Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn).
