Ukrainian Member of Parliament Tries Seizing Uman Synagogue
(August 8, 2005)
A member of the Ukrainian parliament burst into a synagogue in Uman, Ukraine accompanied by police and demanded that its ownership be handed over to him, according to an August 5, 2005 report by the AEN news agency. People's Deputy Pytor Kuzmenko allegedly wants control over money that is currently collected by the synagogue from thousands of Jewish pilgrims who visit the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslaw-a famous Chasidic rabbi.

Vadim Rabinovich, head of the all-Ukraine Jewish Congress, told AEN that he sees Deputy Kuzmenko's action as a "deliberate provocation" aimed at undermining the authority of the new government of President Viktor Yushchenko.
