Planned community development could double population of Sullivan County town
A group of Town of Thompson residents may have withdrawn their petition to create a new village; however, they do want to move forward with their proposal to create a planned community development district it the 360 acres of land in the area of their existing homes and at build out, that could add some 15,000 people to the town's 13,000 population. The town is adjacent to the Village of Monticello.
The leaders of the Yeshiva Viznits planned community development district met with the town board yesterday and plan on meeting with town officials regularly to hammer out an agreed upon development plan.
Town Councilman William Rieber will be part of those talks. ''I think the town has certainly indicated a willingness to talk and will do that and negotiate in good faith,'' he said. ''I just wanted the town board and the people in the room to realize that the densities they are asking for are substantially greater than we now have on the books.''
The area that they want to develop is zoned for single and two-family homes. The planned community leaders would like that increased to four-family homes with a density of some 40 percent more than town zoning presently permits.
