'CONCORDE JR.' WAITS IN WINGS

October 10, 2005 -- It's no flight of fancy. A next-generation supersonic "Son of Concorde" jetliner could make the trip from New York to London a mere one-hour commute.
France and Japan are working together to develop a sleeker, super-sized version, designed to fly five times the speed of sound and carry three times the number of passengers as the original 100-seat Concorde.
The first unmanned prototype is slated for a test flight over the Australian Outback between now and Saturday.
A separate test of its engine clocked it at Mach 5.5, or 3,700 mph.
