Comatose Sharon opens eyes; significance unclear

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon opened his eyes twice on Monday after family members played a tape of his grandson's voice, aides said, raising hopes the 77-year-old stroke victim may be emerging from a coma.
But a spokeswoman for Hadassah hospital, where Sharon has been treated since suffering a brain hemorrhage on January 4, said relatives had observed "eyelid movements" whose medical significance was unclear. http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1509852

Doctor Says Sharon's Life Still in Danger
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's life remains in danger, despite his continued improvement following a massive stroke, one of his doctors said Wednesday.
"The prime minister's life is still in danger. He suffered a serious stroke, period," Dr. Jose Cohen, one of Sharon's neurosurgeons, told Israel TV. "Until we have passed a few more stages we are still very cautious, We know that every day, although we are getting further out of danger, we are still in danger."
Doctors had said on Tuesday that Sharon was out of immediate danger, but Cohen appeared to be more cautious in his assessment.
He also said Wednesday that doctors were heartened by movement that Sharon made on his left side, which might mean that the right side of Sharon's brain was not as damaged as doctors thought. That movement was significant because Sharon's suffered severe bleeding on the right side of his brain, which controls the left side of the body.

Sharon cuts crime from hospital bed

Burglaries, car thefts and other crimes have more than halved since Israelis began gluing themselves to television sets for news of their ailing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"We have seen a fall of more than 50 percent in offences since Mr Sharon was admitted to the Hadassah" hospital in Jerusalem last Wednesday, police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told AFP on Tuesday.
In the first three days after Sharon's massive stroke, only 865 burglaries were reported compared to 1,739 in the corresponding period last year.
Police attributed the fall to the fact that householders and would-be burglars have been preoccupied with their prime minister's fight for life.
"It's obviously more difficult to break into a house while the owner is stuck in front of the television," one police source told the Maariv daily.
"But it's also possible that some of the burglars have themselves decided to stay in to follow Mr Sharon's health."

הרקע לאירוע הוא אופיו של בית הכנסת, אליו מגיעים להתפלל יהודים מכל החוגים. שכן, בניגוד למרבית בתי הכנסת בעיר, מתקיימים שם מניינים לתפילת שחרית עד חצות היום, ולערבית – עד חצות הלילה. מה שקרה הוא, שבקריאת התורה של אחד המניינים, רכש את העליות יהודי ספרדי, והלה אחרי הברכות ביקש באדיבות לערוך 'מי שברך' לחולה מסויים. הגבאי התמים, שכבר ראה שמות מסובכים בהרבה, לא הקשה עליו יותר מדי, אלא ערך את ה'מי בירך' בחפץ לב.
רק מתי מעט מהמתפללים תפסו במי מדובר, אך זה כבר היה מאוחר.
הם מחו נמרצות, אך דבר ה'מי שברך' המוזר הזה, התפרסם בכל העיר, וגרם לאי נוחות רבה לפרנסי בית המדרש.

Sharon's own surgeon says he will not be able to work again
Ariel Sharon is able to breathe independently, report doctors who have started to bring the Israeli prime minister out of a coma.
While stressing that his condition remained critical, the Hadassah hospital said the development indicated "some sort of activity in his brain".
Doctors are currently reducing the amount of anaesthetic Mr Sharon is being given, in an effort to wake him.
He has been in an induced coma since being operated on for a major stroke.
Brain activity signs
The process of weaning him off the sedation is likely to be slow, taking hours or even days, doctors have said, and a full assessment of any brain damage he has suffered can only be made once it is completed.

Waking up from a coma
However, the fact that he is able to breathe is encouraging, Hadassah Hospital director Dr Shlomo Mor-Yosef said.
"This is the first sign of some sort of activity in his brain," he said.
Nonetheless, the prime minister remains hooked up to a ventilator.
The neurosurgeon who operated on the 77-year-old prime minister, Jose Cohen, has said that although his chances of survival are "very high", Mr Sharon will not be able to continue as prime minister.
Damage assessment
Once Mr Sharon is out of the coma, induced to allow him to rest and heal, his doctors will begin testing his responses.
