An editorial last week in a local Yiddish newspaper, Der Blatt, cited the mayor's position then as a catalyst for the huge campaign rally for him on Nov. 5 in Williamsburg.
"What has been promised to us prior to the recent elections - and this was the only request we made - was that the subject of metzitzah b'peh should be completely untouched by the city department of health," the editorial said. "This and only this was the reason why thousands of Orthodox Jews registered themselves to vote, undersigned a petition to the mayor, came out in droves, men, women and children, to an unprecedented rally."

ut one segment of the Satmar community (supporters of Aaron, if you follow the Shakespearean politics of the Satmar) is pushing back much harder, most recently in an editorial from a Satmar Yiddish paper published in Williamsburg, Der Blatt.
The paper's editors claim to have understood that City Hall made a campaign promise to leave circumcision practices unregulated; now they accuse unnamed intermediaries (read: their communal opponents) of distorting the result of the community's negotiations with the Mayor.

Rabbis Fighting Department of Health
January 5th, 2006
A battle is brewing between Orthodox Jews and city health officials. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene now says it will launch a public education campaign against the practice of metzitzah b'peh, a widely used circumcision procedure in which the practitioner cleans blood off the wound by sucking it with his mouth. Last month, health officials concluded that five infants caught herpes from the practice. One of the children died from the disease and another suffered brain damage, according to the Health Department.
Jewish leaders are fighting the campaign, while health officials aren't budging on their stance. Ben Smith excerpts a few paragraphs of an editorial the Yiddish paper Der Blatt and seems to point to a campaign promise that pinned Orthodox support for Bloomberg on the city's non-interference in circumcision practices. It's a stew of legal, cultural and political issues, and it may be, as Smith writes, ''rising to a head.''
