Israel is faced with acts of war against her. This war began with terrorists from Gaza tunneling into Israeli sovereign territory, murdering two Israeli soldiers and kidnapping a third, Cpl. Gilad Shalit. This provocation was a culmination of continuous shelling from Gaza into Israeli communities and schools. Terrorists have launched over 850 Kassam rockets since Israels disengagement last August. Instead of using disengagement as an opportunity for nation- building, Hamas has chosen to increase its armaments, build rockets and attack Israel. The Israeli government cannot and should not tolerate these unprovoked, belligerent attacks on its citizens.
Yesterday, July 12, Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel in the north, using Hamas tactics. Hezbollah crossed the internationally recognized border, the Blue Line, attacked IDF soldiers, killing two and kidnapping two. The attack was followed by Hezbollah launching barrages of rockets and missiles into Nahariah, Haifa and other Israeli cities and villages. Within 24 hours, 120 Israelis had been wounded and two killed. Such actions cannot be tolerated. These are acts of war.
If the US were being shelled by Canada or Mexico, it would be faced with an existential, bellicose threat and the world would expect Americans to respond accordingly.
We remain firmly supportive of Israels defensive measures. We will do all we can to clarify Israels current response to the provocations it faces.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Israel and its people, and with all those who long for peace in the region.
