NORTH HUDSON — The Brooklyn man who was stranded in his car for more than a day on the side of the Northway died of hypothermia.
His wife — who was trapped with him — was in stable condition Saturday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
State Police based in Ray Brook would not release any information about the cause of the crash.
The accident happened off the southbound lane of Interstate 87 near mile marker 105 in the Town of North Hudson.
Alfred and Barbara Langner passed through the occasional U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint around 1 a.m. Thursday.
They had gone to a wedding in Montreal and were on headed home to Brooklyn.
The accident happened shortly after when their maroon 1989 Lincoln Town Car left the road and landed on its wheels, according to Elizabethtown-Lewis Ambulance Squad officer Patty Bashaw.
The couple's family became worried when they failed to return home and called police. A search began Friday morning and the car was located at 9:53 a.m. that day.
Mr. Langner, 63, died by the time help arrived. Mrs. Langner, 58, was conscious and suffering from an immobilizing back injury and cold-related injuries.
State Sen. Betty Little expressed outrage after learning that Mr. Langner died of hypothermia.
"I can't imagine what that woman went through," she said Saturday, referring to Mrs. Langner.
Little has spoken to local Assemblywomen Janey Duprey and Teresa Sayward. Little also called a Brooklyn senator, who is a friend of hers, to express her sympathy and discuss the situation.
Little said she has been in touch with Gov. Eliot Spitzer's office and the Department of Homeland Security about this matter.
She wants to see cell service on the Northway as soon as possible.
Little (R-Queensbury) has long been pushing for reliable cell coverage on the desolate stretch of highway.
In December, the possibility of placing temporary cell towers at rest areas and State Department of Transportation sheds was raised by Sayward and Little.
However, Little said that the permitting process for the rest-area towers is cumbersome, and everyone would be better off going with permanent towers.
"The objection to cell towers on the Northway is totally visual, and it's wrong," Little said.
This tragedy will be magnified if nothing is done to ensure the safety of others, she said.
"I think this will get national attention," Little said. "Hopefully we'll accomplish something."
NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) -- A 63-year-old man died of hypothermia and his wife was hospitalized after their car went off an Adirondack highway and they were stranded for about 32 hours, according to police and emergency personnel.
Authorities said Alfred Langner and Barbara Langner, 59, of Brooklyn, were returning from a wedding in Montreal early Thursday. They passed through the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in the town of North Hudson around 1 a.m. and drove off Interstate 87 soon after that.
Barbara Langner tried to summon help but was unable to get cell phone service. Family members reported them missing Friday. Their 1989 Lincoln Town Car went off the highway in North Hudson, about 90 miles north of Albany, where it was spotted in woods near the highway shortly before 10 a.m. Friday.
Overnight temperatures both nights in the Adirondacks were below zero.
Alfred Langner was found dead in the car, and a medical examination showed he died of hypothermia, State Police said Saturday.
Barbara Langner had a back injury and her feet were frozen, and she said her husband stopped talking to her about 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, ambulance officer Patty Bashaw told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican.
"The car went airborne. It landed on its wheels behind a huge rock and took down some trees," Bashaw said, noting cell phone service along that remote stretch of highway might have saved them both. "He lived for at least 13 hours. He tried to get out of the car, but he couldn't."
