New Square – Families from 17 apartments in Building 153-157 on Clinton Avenue in New Square are homeless after a fire that raged early this morning.
The fire was reported to Ramapo Town Police at 2:15 a.m. Officers evacuated 27 apartments in both the involved building and those adjoining it. The 17 displaced families were being cared for by the New Square community.
The fire was extensive and required the response of nine fire departments as well as EMS. No civilian injuries were reported; however, one firefighter was treated for a foot injury.
The fire will be investigated by Ramapo Police Department detectives and the Rockland County Sheriff's Department BCI Arson Unit when the scene is considered safe.
