New York, NY - Federal and New York City
officials announced that 30 individuals have been charged with defrauding the
Section 8 program of over $1 million in housing subsidies.
Twenty-nine of the 30 individuals charged have been arrested, one remains at large. Each defendant is charged with theft of government funds and faces a sentence up to 10 years' imprisonment. Certain defendants are also charged with conspiracy to commit theft of government funds.
Some of the deliberate acts engaged in by these 30 defendants include some Section 8 landlords who secretly resided with their Section 8 tenants while collecting rent subsidies for the apartments.
Michael Garcia, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York stated, "This investigation should serve as a reminder that scamming the government to get housing subsidies you're not entitled to isn't an option. The City and federal government will continue to vigilantly pursue those who pilfer funds designated for needy New Yorkers." [VIN]
