Stewart to go after scheduled international flights

Stewart Airport – The Port Authority is sending its ''A Team'' to the United Kingdom next month to meet with international carriers and solicit interest in creating regular service between Stewart Airport in Newburgh and Europe.

Port Aviation Director William DeCota and Stewart General Manager Diannae Ehler will be meeting with a number of airlines in an attempt to convince them to provide service to the Hudson Valley.

Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco would not say with which airlines they will be meetings or in what city, but he said the intent is to convince carriers to fly a transatlantic route.

''One of the areas where we see potential for growth is in a transatlantic route in a London or a Stansted, and we are hopeful that these talks will be productive and that we will have something to announce in 2008,'' he said.

DiFulco maintained the Port's stance that Stewart will not be developed to be another Kennedy, Newark or LaGuardia, but that any service developed would be only for Hudson Valley residents.

In the past, Stewart has had charter service to Mexico and for a brief period in the mid-1990s, it had regularly scheduled service to Canada

Port Authority ready to build infrastructure for international fights

Stewart Airport – With Port Authority officials ready to take their pitch for international flights to airlines in Great Britain, the agency that operates Stewart Airport stands ready to do whatever is needed to upgrade facilities at the Newburgh airport to accommodate that service.

Segregated customs and immigration facilities must be in place for inbound passengers from overseas and William DeCota, the Port's aviation director, told MidHudsonNews.com they are ready to build.

''If we can identify a carrier that would be willing to offer service, and we are out there right now trying to market the airport to the international, we will build a facility as quickly as possible,'' he said. ''There is a possibility of a federal inspections service, Customs and Immigration facility and adding an international gate on a very quick, expedited basis.''
Port Authority officials say they would love to announce international service some time this year.

Stewart brass eye British carriers
Officials plan trip to England to size up interest

STEWART AIRPORT — In its ongoing quest for more airlines, Stewart International Airport is looking to the east.

No, not the Far East. Eastward to the United Kingdom.

William DeCota, the Port Authority's aviation director, and Diannae Ehler, general manager of Stewart, will fly there next month to meet with officials of various airlines. It's a trip DeCota makes regularly, but this time the focus will be on Stewart, which the Port Authority began running Nov. 1.

And one of the things they'll try to get a handle on is what, if any, interest airlines over there might have in setting up regular passenger service between Europe and Stewart.

If the overseas flights happen, it would not be the first regularly scheduled international passenger service at Stewart, though it would be the first to go beyond the Western Hemisphere.

United Express launched a daily flight to Toronto aboard 30-seat planes in September 1992. They later cut back to 19-seat planes but still found themselves unable to fill enough seats each day, and the service was dropped after six months.

Charter flights to Cancun, Mexico, also flew out of Stewart for a time in the early 1990s.

Ehler said yesterday that she and DeCota will be promoting the Hudson Valley while they're overseas.

"We do think there's a potential market on both sides" of the Atlantic Ocean, Ehler said.

Flights to even a few European cities would open up the possibility for travelers out of Stewart to book connecting flights to other destinations.

But Ehler said the trip also will provide other insights — including the need to expand Stewart's terminal, or build a second one, in the future. The terminal is designed to accommodate about 1.5 million travelers a year. Stewart recorded about 900,000 last year, triple the passenger volume in 2006.

So if, for example, they were to learn an airline in Great Britain is interested in starting service in three or four months, Ehler said, "I want to be able to talk about how quickly I could accommodate that need."

Regardless of whether the European flights materialize, if the Port Authority comes through on its vow to bring more airlines to Stewart, eventually more terminal space would be needed. Ehler said she hopes to have a design for a "modest expansion" of the terminal by the end of the year
