Obituary: Edward S. Reich

Edward
S. Reich, a Brooklyn bar leader who spent nearly two years in federal
prison for accepting bribes while serving as a court-appointed referee,
died on Monday. He was 71.
Mr. Reich, a personal injury lawyer, was president of the
Brooklyn Bar Association from 1991 to 1992. He also was a vice
president of the New York State Bar Association and a member of the
grievance committee responsible for disciplining lawyers in Brooklyn
and Queens. He served on the Brooklyn Bar Association's judiciary
committee, which rates the qualification of candidates for the
judiciary, for 27 years.
Mr. Reich graduated from Cornell College in 1957 and from Brooklyn Law School in 1960.
In 2004, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of
New York accused Mr. Reich of accepting $10,500 in bribes while acting
as a court-appointed referee overseeing the sale of foreclosed
properties. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy,
but admitted accepting three bribes and paid $10,500 in restitution.
Mr. Reich was disbarred on Jan. 20, 2006 after resigning from the bar. He was released from prison on Aug. 31, 2007.
He is survived by his wife Arlene and three children.

REICH--Edward Stuart, age 71, of New York City and Poughkeepsie, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2008. Beloved husband of Arlene, devoted father of Dawne, Heidi and Evan. Adored grandfather of Logan. Son of the late Herman and the late Frances Reich. He held the following positions at various times in his career: President of the Brooklyn Bar Association, Vice-President of the New York State Bar Association, President of the Lawyers Torah Club, Co-chair of the MIT Parents Fund, Parliamentarian Emeritus of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Jewish National Fund of Greater New York.
