April 29, 2008 UJCARE logo.jpgUJCARE Executive Vice President, Rabbi Leib Glanz, received a White House invitation to participate in a Summit on Inner-City Children and Faith Based Schools. Taking part in five separate sessions over a two-day period, Rabbi Glanz spoke with distinguished community leaders from across the country, promoting the issue of school choice, specifically addressing its significance in the Chassidic communities, where public school is simply not a choice. Rabbi Glanz also pursued the notion of PELL grants (which are currently available only to college students) for private high schools and elementary schools a concept supported by President Bush. President Bush described faith-based schools as a critical national asset, a critical familial asset and an environment that differs from that of the typical public school. Two other speakers shared their experiences with their own children in public school, saying that private religious school will be the only appropriate choice for their other children. Also in attendance was Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Director of Government and Public Affairs of Agudath Israel [reported HERE on YWN]. Agudath Israel has been a long-time advocate of school choice, educational vouchers, tuition tax credits and other assistance for all parents of school-age children.
While at the summit, Rabbi Glanz also had an opportunity to discuss domestic issues with Karl Zinsmeister, the Presidents Chief Domestic policy Advisor.
In all, twenty speakers addressed the gathering of one-hundred over the two-day event, representing every community and every culture across the U.S. ''The mere fact that a Chassidic representative was invited to participate in a White House summit is a major triumph.''
