Williamsburg, NY - More then 2 weeks ago, the Bedford Gardens Succah committee headed by Rabbi Meyer Spitz contacted the BG Tenants council and myself, and they were very concerned that Kraus Management has given them a major problem with ALL paper work (insurance, construction company, licensed plumber, licensed electrician, etc;) that he submitted to Kraus responding to the official request made with all guidelines in order to have the Sukkah built as was done in the last 25 years.
out of the blue, Kraus response to Spitz was "that the paper work is false and forged" and construction on the Succah will not be able to continue construction, all work was stopped and panic struck, e-mails and phone calls to Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) which ACTS as the supervising agency for Mitch-Llama developments, the Mayor's Community Assistance Unit and to Kraus Management, to dispute their claim that the papers that was submitted for accurate and legal.
The claim by Kraus that the paper's were "false and forged" traveled all over HPD and CAU, that by now it was clear that its not just a stumbling block that Kraus is trying to use against the residents of the development to observe and practice their religion in the way that has been done at Bedford for the last 30 years. BUT, its now a serious matter that can not and will not happen with phony documents.
for 5 consecutive days last week BG TC sent numerous e-mails and made hundreds of calls to all parties with documents that were sent to Kraus proving that they all are legal, dated, signed with all parties on these documents as was requested by Kraus in its original request.
every time these papers reached Kraus and all agencies, Kraus found a new reason to stall the response and ignore every response made by BG and Spitz. Promises and assurances that this will be resolved, came from many different people and agency staff, as of Sunday morning, all e-mails, calls and correspondence to all mentioned above-there is not a single movement to continue building the Succah.
we have come to the conclusion, that while there may be great concern by all to get it built-we are running out of time and the contractor already notified us that it will cost twice as much with additional people to get it done before Yom Tov.
we urge all residents of Williamsburg, the entire Jewish Community and its leaders at large, as well as all City, State and Federal elected officials to join us on Monday, October 6, 2008 at 6 PM on the grounds of Bedford Gardens to demonstrate against Kraus Management and its stalling tactics, harassments and totally violating the tenants religious rights and practice.
