Gallup has set up a very cool site that breaks down data from its "well-being index" by congressional district -- and you can browse by map or in list form. So, I decided to take it out for a spin.

The Gallup-Healthways index isn't a one-time snapshot like most polls, but an aggregate of continuous daily tracking polls taken of attitudes about Americans' physical and mental health as well as their feelings about the future, so it's a pretty good gauge of where the country's head is at  (The national index has been sinking lately, and is at a low ebb of 63.8).

Going district by district -- and accounting for the vagaries of the rating system -- the picture is pretty stark: The happiest House districts are the richest; the unhappiest are the poorest.

I decided to cross-match Census Bureau median income figures with the top ten highest and lowest well-being scores and found an iron-clad, if not uniform, rich-happy/poor-sad correlation. (The two outliers were congressional districts in New York and Michigan were some of the state's poorest areas were gerrymandered with affluent ones).

And there seems to be a partisan pattern. Seven of the 10 most content districts were represented by Republicans -- nine of the 10 unhappiest were represented by Democrats.

Two interesting exceptions: Coal Country Republican Hal Rogers (R-Kent.) represents the unhappiest district of all,  and Silicon Valley Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo sits atop the happy heap.
