An organization calling itself Freedom for Kiryas Joel adjusted its math and delivered a revised rant to the chambers of state Supreme Court Justice Joseph G. Owen last week. The group accused Owen of favoring the Hasidic village's prevailing power structure in "many matters concerning religious oppression and mistreatment of people in our community," although it cited neither chapter, verse nor paragraph of any particular matter. In the original tirade, faxed to Owen's chambers on Dec. 1, the group referred to Owen's son, who just took office as a Town of Wallkill justice, and said that "if you think your son will run one day for Supreme Court justice, you can rest assured that 60 percent of the nearly 3,000 voters will not vote for your son."
The revised fax arrived the next day, with a correction box on the front: "Correction: 60 percent of 5,000 voters will not vote for your son."
Freedom for Kiryas Joel supplied a disconnected phone number on the flier, so there's no one to clarify whether the group discovered 2,000 registered voters in a single day. Which is a shame, because that would probably be some kind of record.

After the ruling, a group purporting to represent "2,500 voters who did not vote for Abe Wieder" — Kiryas Joel's mayor — faxed Owen a letter accusing him of repeatedly siding with the main congregation and asking him to recuse himself from future cases about Kiryas Joel "governmental actions."
Owen retires this month. But the letter warns of an electoral backlash if the judge's son — Wallkill Town Justice Joseph A. Owen — ever runs for Supreme Court justice.
