BORUCH DAYAN EMMES: Brutal Murder Of 9-Year-Old Leiby Kletzky A”H

(Wednesday, July 13th, 2011)

5:20AM EST (Wednesday): With an indescribable amount of pain, and a heavy heart, YWN regrets to inform you of the brutal murder of 9-year-old Leiby Kletzky A”H. Although the details are still unfolding, Misaskim is working closely with the NYPD and NYC Medical Examiner to ensure that the proper Kavod is given to the Niftar, who was brutally murdered.

So many organizations and community activists worked together in harmony the past few days, including Hatzolah, Shomrim, Misaskim, Chaveirim, and others. Thousands upon thousands of volunteers gave of their time, and walked the streets in the sweltering heat for hours on end, to try and find Leiby A”H. The tremendous amount of unity among Yidden, and the massive Kiddush Hashem performed in the past few days should be a Zechus for the Niftar.

A public thanks must be given to the NYPD, who for the past two days worked tirelessly on the case. They brought in every resource that the department has available, and showed incredible personal involvement. Most notably was the constant presence of Brooklyn South Chief Joseph Fox, who was seen on the streets of Boro Park for the past 48 hours.

Early Wednesday, authorities arrested three people at the Kensington home at 466 East Second Street. FBI and police had to kick the door in. A gold car was found nearby, similar to one seen in a surveillance video police uncovered during their hunt for the boy.

A man who is seen walking near the boy in the video is one of those in custody, chief police spokesman Paul J. Browne said.

Police have not given a motive for the crime.

“There is no indication at this time that the victim was known to the suspect previously,” Browne said in a statement released Wednesday morning.

“Before establishing his identity, detectives had observed the suspect in a video recorded at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, where he was seen entering a dentist’s office on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn,” Browne said. “Detectives located one of the dentists, who worked there at his home in New Jersey late last night, and established that the suspect had been in the dentist’s office on Monday to pay a bill.”

Police said that, with the assistance of a receptionist and another dentist associated with the practice, detectives tracked down records, found the name and address of the suspect, then went to his home — where he was arrested.

VIL MONSTER: Aron Levi Named As The Man Who Butchered Leiby Kletzy A”H

(Wednesday, July 13th, 2011)

The body of Leiby Keletzky was found at two locations in Brooklyn this morning and police arrested a suspect in the slaying who had part of the child in his freezer, R”L.

Police have arrested Levi Aron, a suspect in the killing of 9-year-old Leiby. Police made the gruesome discovery after raiding a Kensington home and arresting 35-year-old Aron, who led them to parts of Leiby’s body, stuffed in a red suitcase and hidden in a dumpster outside an auto repair shop about two miles away.

Retracing the suspects steps from the surveillance video released yesterday, Police had observed Aron entering a dentist’s office on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn at 5:30 PM on Monday.

Detectives located one of the dentists at his home in New Jersey last night and established that the suspect had been in the dentists’ office on Monday to pay a bill. The dentist, said the man wasn’t a patient but was paying a bill for a patient there and police were able to find him using those records.

With the assistance of a receptionist and another dentist associated with the practice, detectives at 2 a.m. found records at the dentists’ office that established the suspect’s name and address. Aron was arrested about 40 minutes later.

Cops said Aron, who works at the Empire Supply hardware store on McDonald Avenue in Kensington, had three knives in a butcher block inside his apartment.

A co-worker said Aron is divorced with no kids and acted completely normal at work yesterday.

“I can’t believe this,” he said. “He was a strange guy, but he was here yesterday and he was fine after killing this little boy.”

New York - City Comptroller John C. Liu issued the following statement today regarding the death of eight-year old Leiby Kletzky:
“Our hearts are with the family of little Leiby Kletzky in a time of indescribable tragedy.  As the father of young son almost the same age as Leiby, I cannot begin to imagine what they and their community are suffering.  We pray that justice will be dispensed without delay for this crime which horrifies and offends us all.  The NYPD, Shomrim Patrol and Hatzolah are owed our gratitude for their quick response.”

STATEMENT BY PUBLIC ADVOCATE DE BLASIO ON THE DEATH OF EIGHT YEAR-OLD LEIBY KLETZY

“Words cannot express the sadness and the anger so many of us feel following the murder of eight year-old Leiby Kletzy. As a parent of two children, my heart goes out to his family and his community as they cope with this unspeakable tragedy. I commend the efforts of the NYPD, Shomrim Patrol and Hatzolah, who worked so tirelessly to find Leiby these past two days, and I hope for a swift application of justice for this heinous crime.”

STATEMENT BY MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT SCOTT M. STRINGER ON THE DEATH OF LEIBBY KLETZSKY
Along with other New Yorkers, I am shocked and saddened this morning by the news of Leibby Kletzky’s death. Random, senseless killings are horrific wherever and whenever they occur—but the violent murder of an 8-year-old boy walking home alone from school for the first time is an appalling and painful crime. My heart goes out to Leibby’s parents and other family members, his friends and the community that loved him. Nothing can ever replace a lost child, but justice can and will be done. I want to thank the New York City Police Dept. and community volunteers for their hard work in helping to arrest a suspect so quickly in this case.

Brooklyn, NY -  Photos of the crime scene earlier this morning where the Borough Park boy’s body were discovered in Sunset Park.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who helped head up the search for Leibby, said it is hard to comprehend what happened.

“It’s something that I, like every school parent would think today, how could something like this happen? How is it possible that someone could take a nine-year-old, a little boy, an innocent little boy, and do what he did to this little child?” Hikind said on a phone interview with NY1. “People are out here in the streets where the family is. I met with the family many times yesterday and just tried to give them strength and hope that things will turn out well. Oh my god, oh my god.”

Brooklyn, NY - NYPD: Man Implicated Self; No Relation To Family

Brooklyn, NY - The dismembered body of a missing 9-year-old Hasidic boy was found at two locations in Brooklyn and police this morning arrested a suspect in the slaying—who had the child’s severed feet in his freezer, sources told The Post.

Police made the gruesome discovery after raiding a Kensington home and arresting the 35-year-old suspect, who led them to parts of missing boy Leibby Kletsky’s body, stuffed in a suitcase and hidden in a Dumpster outside an auto repair shop about two miles away, sources said.
Police said they found three knives in a butcher block inside the suspect’s apartment.

The suspect was taken into custody at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday at his home on East Second Street in the Kensington section of Brooklyn, and NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said that during questioning, the man “made statements implicating himself” in the death of Leibby.

It was a tragic end to the “angelic” 9-year-old, who disappeared Monday afternoon after getting lost while walking alone for the first time from his Borough Park day camp and following a man down a busy street, sparking a massive search.

“There are no words, just no words, to describe the sense of what happened here,” said State Assemblyman Dov Hikind in an interview this morning.
Police did not release the name of the suspect, but sources said they tracked him down by tracing credit card transactions and video surveillance that showed the boy walking behind a bearded man on 45th Street and Dahill Road and possibly getting into a gold-colored car.

Witnesses who saw police raid the suspect’s home at E. 2nd St. and Avenue C recognized the handcuffed, bearded man from surveillance videos. A gold-colored car was also found at the residence, and investigators were seen going over the vehicle inch by inch.

“I’m shocked,” said Rosso Safia, 23, owner of the Park Slope Auto Center. “There’s a little kid in the dumpster we use. I have a little girl of my own. This is the worst thing that has ever happened to us.”

Safia said the store put it’s garbage out around 6:30 last night and that the dumpster is emptied some time between midnight and 3 a.m. He said police told him the dumpster was empty when the boy’s body was discovered.

“When they pick up the garbage they leave the plastic top open so anyone could have tossed it in.”

Kletsky was last seen on surveillance video around 45th Street and Dahill Road walking behind a bearded man in a white shirt and dark pants.
“The boy is standing alone at some point. The male crosses the street in his direction, and the boy follows him on Dahill Road,” said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne, adding that it’s unclear whether the pair exchanged words.

New York, NY - NYPD Commish: Shomrim Played Key Role, Suspect Panicked Lead To Murder

Published on:   Today 12:03 PM

New York, NY - Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the suspect Levi Aron told detectives that after he picked the boy up in his car and took him to his apartment, he later “panicked” after hearing about the missing person reports, which is why he killed him.

Some of the boy’s remains were found in Aron’s refrigerator, Kelly said.

“This was a horrendous crime,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a briefing Wednesday on the case.

Charges were pending, and information about an attorney for Aron, who turned 35 on Wednesday, was not immediately available.

Police got a tip about Aron based on surveillance video released late Tuesday night, and tracked him at his home in Kensington. Kelly acknowledged publicly the Shomrim Patrol for providing a license plate number that lead the to Levi.

When detectives arrived at Aron’s apartment, the door was open, Kelly said. They entered and asked where the boy was, and Aron nodded toward the kitchen, where police found carving knives covered with blood, along with human remains, in the refrigerator.

He then reportedly directed police to an area about 2 and a half miles away, near 20th Street and Fourth Avenue, where the rest of the boy’s remains were found in a black plastic bag inside a red suitcase that had been tossed in a Dumpster.

A source tells NBC New York that he said he suffocated the child first before dismembering his body.

Aron lives in the third floor of his parents’ house on Avenue C. His parents live on the ground floor and another tenant lives on the second floor of the building.

Police said Aron had moved back to Brooklyn after living in Memphis, Tenn. for several years. Investigators will be contacting authorities in Tennessee to piece together the details of his life, Kelly said.

Outside the boy’s family’s apartment building Wednesday morning, men and women from the community clustered in separate groups. Many of the mothers gathered there said the streets are safe enough for a child Leibby’s age to walk home alone.

“This is a no-crime area,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind, whose district includes the area.

“When news of Leibby’s disappearance broke, I joined my constituents and parents everywhere in a sense of fear and concern, mixed with a powerful hope that he would be found unharmed.  Today, I am speechless and shocked by the brutality and injustice of this horrific crime.  As a father and a human being, I am deeply saddened that so innocent a soul could be so cruelly taken.  I join my constituents in Borough Park and people everywhere in wishing the Kletzky family strength and blessings to heal from this awful tragedy.”
