Swastikas and anti-Semitic writing were found on a synagogue in Brooklyn Saturday.
A rabbi found the graffiti on both entrances to the building on 38th Street in Borough Park. The police were called, but no arrests have been made.
Many residents say hype surrounding the new Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of the Christ" is to blame for a recent increase in hate crimes, including graffiti and vandalized cars, in the heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood.
''I haven't seen this kind of upsurge that we've had in the past six months at any period prior,'' said state Assemblyman Dov Hikind. ''So what do you attribute it to, what is causing this? Something is terribly wrong – that's quite clear.''
''All of the sudden the movie comes out,'' said Rabbi Edgar Gluck, a member of Community Board 12, ''which is like the Ford book that came out and the 'Mein Kampf' written about Jews. I think this movie is going to bring about many more types of these situations.''
Police recently added more patrols to the neighborhood as result of the string of vandalism, which has often coincided with the Jewish sabbath and other holidays.
