LAKEWOOD, N.J. - A 7-month-old boy was found dead in his car seat Thursday, after he was accidentally left inside a vehicle for several hours, authorities said. The baby's father was arrested.
Aryeh Katzman, 25, of Lakewood, had placed his son, Chaim, in the car at their home early Thursday and apparently forgot about him while attending classes, Detective Capt. Robert Lawson, a Lakewood police spokesman, said Thursday. The father realized the baby was in the car only when he arrived at the baby-sitter's to pick the boy up, Lawson said.
It was not immediately clear how long the baby had been in the car, but Lawson said the child apparently had been dead for some time when he was found around 2 p.m. Temperatures in the area had risen only to the mid-60s by the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
"It wasn't a very warm day, but being in the car for some time and with the sun bearing down, it became very hot in the vehicle," Lawson said.
Katzman was charged with second-degree child endangerment and released after posting $100,000 bail. There was no answer at his home Thursday.
"I just feel grief for the family," said Terrence Joyner, 34, who lives across the street from the Katzmans. "It must be hard to lose a child. Then again, too, how do you leave a 7-month-old unattended?"
