MOSCOW, Russia - Russian President Vladimir Putin personally awarded the Order of Friendship to Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar in the Kremlin's Yekaterininsky Hall.
The order of Friendship is awarded for great achievements in the fields of economical, social, political and cultural development, for accomplishments in improving friendship between nations.
Earlier President Putin signed the decree that would see Russia's Chief Rabbi honored with this order. Upon learning that he would be presented the Order, Rabbi Lazar commented, "We are now facing an important point in history, when we are able to freely promote our culture and traditions, as well as contribute to the development of Russia and its relations with other countries. I am pleased to receive this Order at this time, when we can appreciate our freedom of worship and the stable position of the Jewish Community. We use our freedom to strengthen our knowledge and to help each other and other nations."
Today, Rabbi Lazar expressed his gratitude for this award, also voiced on behalf of the Jewish community in Russia. He also thanked the President for his cooperation and support for the development of Jewish life in Russia. "In search of national idea, there are two concepts of utmost importance: returning to one's spiritual roots and achieving tolerance and mutual respect for neighboring peoples. I think this Order demonstrates the necessity for strengthening these two very important aspects for Russia", concluded Lazar.
