Sullivan County County Democrats are steamed that a
meeting of Sullivan County bungalow owners – a group predominantly made up of members of the Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish community – turned into a vote-trawling rally for Republicans. One of the speakers, Phil Sager, Thompson's Republican chairman, identified himself as the party chair and passed out more than 100 voter registration cards. No Democrats were invited to attend. Department of Environmental Law Judge Ed Buhrmaster sides with the county on most points in its bid to build a new 3.4-acre cell and keep the landfill open beyond next year. In the judge's much anticipated, 54-page decision, the county must submit an acceptable odor control plan and adhere to stringent litter control policies. In his decision, the judge rejected such hot-button issues as reducing the annual tonnage and ending importation. Bethel Roy Howard and Jeryl Abramson, organizers of a Woodstock reunion festival set for next month on the former Max Yasgur homestead in Bethel, say they refuse to accept all the conditions put forward by the town Planning Board and will proceed with the event, permit or not. The pair, through their Web site, are busy promoting the event.
