A teenager who was accused by Ramapo police of stealing a valuable religious hat from a Jewish man is to answer a felony grand larceny charge in Ramapo Town Justice Court on Thursday.
Police said a town resident was walking on Decatur Avenue in the Spring Valley area about 5:32 p.m. Saturday when an 18-year-old man ran by and grabbed his streimel, a round fur hat worn by Hasidic Jews mainly on holidays or other formal dress occasions.
The man "was actually just walking in the area when he was approached by the suspect, and the suspect grabbed his hat as he ran past and fled," Ramapo police Sgt. Martin Reilly said last night.
"Members from the community there observed what took place and they pursued the suspect," he said.
The hat was recovered and returned to its owner.
Police had been called, and officers were sent to the scene.
The bystanders pointed the suspect out to police, and the victim identified the man, Reilly said.
Police declined to reveal the suspect's name and address because he could qualify for youthful offender status, Reilly said.
The suspect was arraigned by Town Justice Rhoda Schoenberger on Saturday in Ramapo Town Justice Court on fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony.
The streimel was valued at more than $1,000, Reilly said.
The suspect, a Spring Valley resident, was sent to the Rockland County jail on $750 bail and ordered to appear in Ramapo Town Justice Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.
