State police last evening pursued, stopped and ticketed a 25-year-old Monroe man driving a sport utility vehicle painted like an ambulance after he apparently wove through traffic on the southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway with lights flashing.
Trooper Muharem Hasan said the man, who was issued tickets for reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and speeding and unsafe lane change, both violations, told officers he was following an ambulance on his way to pick up a customer.
But Trooper Shameed Yaladi, who was sitting on the southbound side of the PIP near Exit 5 at Route 303 with a radar gun, didn't see any ambulance; he just saw the SUV driving through traffic and causing other vehicles to drive off the road onto the berm.
Hasan said the driver of the SUV was traveling about 6:45 p.m. with lights flashing when he passed in front of Yaladi. Yaladi, who said the vehicle was traveling at 87 mph in a 50 mph zone, followed the vehicle for several miles before pulling it over.
The SUV was registered as an EMT vehicle, "but he didn't have the training to be driving a vehicle like that," Hasan said. The SUV was impounded.
