YARDLEY, Pa. - Bad news has rained down on President Bush in the final weeks of his reelection campaign, from flu vaccine shortages, oil price hikes and poor job numbers to missing explosives and massacres in Iraq.
But the torrent of bad news has not dented Bush's poll numbers.
John Kerry has launched daily attacks on Bush's performance as the nation's leader, but they have not resulted in any boost for the Democratic challenger.
The most recent issue has been the 380 tons of explosives that disappeared from an Iraqi ammo dump. Kerry has been citing it since Monday as an example of what he calls Bush's inept war planning. "We've seen no impact" in internal campaign polling, shrugged a top adviser traveling with the Bush campaign.
The reason the news has not affected the race is that each candidate's base of support is solidified and "there's nothing left out there" as far as undecided voters for either camp to poach, said Frank Luntz, a national pollster who usually works with Republicans.
The handful of undecideds who are left overwhelmingly do not want to reelect Bush but are unconvinced that Kerry is a worthy commander-in-chief, Luntz said.
"Bush is bad news. Kerry is a bad candidate," Luntz said.
