Environmentalist says KJ must answer one critical question about water pipeline
As Orange County government and the Village of Kiryas Joel are about to engage in a legal battle over the village's plans to build a 15 mile long pipeline from the New York City aqueduct as it flows through New Windsor to the village, a leading area environmentalist said last night that a major issue must be addressed.
Michael Edelstein, president of Orange Environment, Inc., said the village must examine if there will be enough sewer capacity in the area to accommodate the additional water. ''KJ cannot continue to have growth and not really address those issues; it does need to change what it's doing,'' he said.
The county maintains the village did not answer all of the environmental issues in its environmental impact statement and has filed an Article 78 proceeding in state Supreme Court. The village, meanwhile, has said it is disappointed in the county's actions and has set aside $1 million to fight the lawsuit and file a counter suit.
