CLAMART, France -- At a solemn vigil outside the hospital treating Yasser Arafat, an unusual interfaith moment: An Orthodox Jewish rabbi from New York leaves flowers for the ailing Palestinian leader at the front gate. Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss said he had just arrived from the U.S. to show solidarity with Arafat and the Palestinians.
Another Orthodox Jewish supporter who travelled from Vienna shook hands with a Muslim prayer leader at a makeshift shrine.
The two are among the few Jews who support Arafat, and also oppose Israel's right to exist. More typical, perhaps, of those attending the vigil was Kamel Titouhi, imam of the Clamart mosque, who said, "Yasser Arafat is an example to us."
On Thursday, after the working day and daily Ramadan fast were over, the crowd of well-wishers had swelled to about 50. Many shouldered Palestinian flags and lit candles.
