Board is willing to talk, but not carve up the town
This article represents the views of the Town Board of Woodbury: Supervisor Sheila Conroy; Councilwoman Lorraine McNeill; Councilwoman Geraldine Gianzero; Councilwoman Colleen Campbell; and Councilman Michael Aronowitz.
The Woodbury Town Board has read with interest the article in the Sunday Record (12/5/04) regarding the Village of Kiryas Joel and land purchases in the surrounding areas. There are a few points which we, as a Board, feel merit clarification.
The article quotes Village Administrator G. Szedegin suggesting that: the "sides" meet to avoid a legal battle and negotiate which parcels of land Kiryas Joel will annex. The Town Board of Woodbury is willing to meet with any municipality engaged in a project that may have significant impacts on the town. However, under no circumstances are we interested in meeting to "carve up" the town as suggested in the article.
As members of the Town Board, we are interested in the well-being of all town residents, including the quality of life and the character of our community. We are charged with the responsibility to uphold the town's laws and to maintain and protect the quality of life and the environment enjoyed by all our residents.
We are prepared to work with the appropriate state and federal agencies to ensure that there are no illegal activities taking place within the town with respect to the sale or proposed sale of land. At the same time, we understand that we cannot interfere with legal sales of land within the town.
It is our policy that town zoning and land use controls will be upheld and enforced. Responsible zoning and land use controls ensure that the environmental quality and character of Woodbury will be maintained, which has been the town's consistent policy. Any changes in zoning will be subject to strict review and environmental scrutiny.
The goal of preserving the town's environment and responding to development proposals in a responsible manner has absolutely no relationship to the religious affiliations of those who may seek to obtain or develop lands within Woodbury. The maintenance of open space and the preservation of water supplies, resources and the environment benefit everyone. These values will not be set aside in order to favor any specific group.
The article suggests that Kiryas Joel leaders and residents detect an undercurrent of "anti-Semitism or anti-Hasidic bigotry." This Board rejects any appeal to bigotry and bias. Consistently our concern is the preservation of Woodbury's environment in the broadest sense. This concern, as stated, has nothing to do with the religious affiliation of anyone who resides or wishes to reside in our town.
