Any county in New York State that has a local sales tax above three percent must seek state permission to retain the higher level each year.
Orange County's rate is 3.75 percent and County Executive Edward Diana is asking the county legislature to send the request to Albany again. ''Because of the additional three-quarters of a penny, we will realize $32 million going into a county coffers, money that we have already put into our budget,'' he said.
Diana would also like Orange County to join 45 other counties in the state in asking Albany to raise the sales tax limit from three percent to four percent before the counties would have to seek annual permission.
