What happened Shabbos Bereishis is simple this. For a number of months there had been every Friday night a 'get together' of yingeleit and others to sing zimiros. Some places call it a Bota. They had speakers everyweek. Occasionally the sons-in-law of R. naftuli would show up. During Sukkos the word went out that RBZ was going to make his own Botah. Attempts were made to have him join with the one that was already a regular occurance. (The sons-in-law of R naftuli didn't come so as to not appear to be acting as Rebbe in the place of R naftuli.) Essentially they wanted it to be like the other public things, with all of them sitting together. RBZ refused to join them. His people tried to pressure the speaker for that week not to go. (He went anyway.) In the end, he had his Botah. It was supposed to be the first, and not the only one. But the pressure, and the negative reaction was so strong that he had to relent. It was a serious mistake, which angered many people. It was considered by many, including myself,as being stupid at best, and an open rebellion against his brother. I think (and many people have said to me) that this is the primary reason why so many people have left him.
