Route 17 closed due to crash
3 killed. 17 to reopen by 8 p.m.

Chester – A young mother and father and their baby were killed in an accident involving a tractor trailer truck, an S.U.V. and several other vehicles today on Route 17, according to witnesses and preliminary police reports. The accident occurred just after 2 p.m. near westbound exit No. 128. The family, which was en route to the Catskills from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, were Hasidic, according to witnesses.
Police have shut down the highway in both directions and expected to keep it blocked until 8 p.m.
Westbound traffic is blocked at exit No. 130 and exit No. 126 in the eastbound lanes.
The snarl has slowed traffic all along Route 17 and the Thruway. Congestion is especially thick on the Thruway between Harriman and the Tappan Zee Bridge, according to New York State Police.
