BLOOMING GROVE, N.Y. (AP) The collision of a minivan and tractor-trailer left three people dead Friday and forced the closure of a section of Route 17 in Orange County, state police said.
The victims were members of the Orthodox Satmar community in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, according to a statement released by community spokesman Isaac Abraham. Their identities haven't been released.
State police Sgt. Bruce Furbeck said the crash happened around 2 p.m. between exits 128 and 129, 53 miles northwest of New York City. Authorities were investigating the cause.
Furbeck expected the highway to remain closed until at least 8 p.m.
The occupants of the minivan were pronounced dead at the scene, and the tractor-trailer driver was hospitalized for minor injuries.
