Residents' blood boils over egg factory odor

Woodridge – Residents are raising a stink about odors from a kosher egg factory in the village.
Discarded egg shells at the factory are causing a stench that has been forcing homeowners to frequently shut their windows and stay indoors this summer. On Monday night, residents crowded into the Woodridge Village Board meeting to complain about the smell and demand action from Newburgh Egg Processing.
Village Trustee Arthur Natelson said the factory used to dispose of its eggshells in the Sullivan County landfill. But the county has stopped accepting that waste, so the company has been forced to store eggshell remains temporarily in tanks at the factory on Novogradsky Road. Wastes attached to the eggshell cause a strong chicken manure-like odor.
"It's not a continuous smell every time, but the plant stinks," Natelson said.
Moses Neustadt, part owner of Newburgh Egg, said the factory is trying to fix the odor problem.
The company recently bought a machine that turns eggshells into fertilizer. A part needed to get the machine running was pledged a month ago, but it hasn't arrived, Neustadt said.
"They've spent millions fixing this," Natelson said. "But people living there have a right to complain, so it's a hard situation."
Newburgh Egg has been processing eggs for 30 years in Woodridge.
Resident Gloria Kantrowitz said she's frustrated with waiting for the factory to fix the smell problem. She is concerned that the fumes will affect her health.
"The odor comes and goes; it reaches the whole village," Kantrowitz said. "My children and grandchildren came Saturday, and we had to stay inside."
