"TABLE FOR THE JEW"
Allenhurst, New Jersey -- Two diners at the Parkhill Waterfront Grill in Jersey, were furious when they saw the check which listed their table as that of the "Jew Couple," they printed the slur instead of a table number on their $36.75 bill and then turned up on their credit-card statement two weeks later.

(1010 WINS) (Allenhurst, NJ) The bill was a shocker, and not because of the amount.
After eating in a Jersey shore restaurant, Elliott Stein, 23, and his girlfriend were handed a bill that said ''Jew Couple'' near the bottom.
Stein, of New York, accompanied by Jennifer Cassin, had sushi and drinks at Parkhill's Waterfront Grill on July 8. When the $36.75 bill came, the slur appeared on it as a table identifier. It also turned up on Stein's credit card bill statement, which came weeks later.
Stein, a regular at the restaurant, was shocked.
''My grandfather went through all that in old-school Europe,'' Stein told the New York Post. ''But that happened more than 50 years ago. You don't expect it to happen in 2005, especially when a lot of their money comes from our community.''
Stein could not be reached for comment Wednesday. He did not return two telephone messages left at his office.
The server, identified on the check as someone named Karina, is no longer working at the restaurant, general manager Malia Wells said Wednesday. Wells wouldn't say if it was because of the incident.
''We don't run our establishment like that,'' Wells said. ''It was definitely poor judgment on her part.''
Stephen Reid, a spokesman for the restaurant, said it had been the waitstaff's practice to use deions of diners to identify them on checks, instead of using the number of their table, as many establishments do.
''Let's say you came in in a blue shirt and I wore a blue cap with 'USA' on it. So they say the guy with the blue shirt and blue cap is table two. I guess she thought it was a funny thing to put down. I think she understands now it wasn't, as does the owner.''
He said racial slurs were never used to describe diners. The restaurant, which is eight years old, is owned by Michael Parkhill.
''The idea that a restaurant or any establishment is labeling customers by race and then printing it on their bill is unbelievable,'' said Etzion Neuer, director of the New Jersey Anti-Defamation League. ''It doesn't even say 'Jew-ish,''' he said. ''It's indefensible.''

Attorney General Involved In Racial Bar Check Case
CBS) NEW YORK A New Jersey restaurant is offering a discount to win back customers after a staff member left an offensive message on a customer's check. This comes as the restaurant braces for a civil rights investigation by the state's attorney general.
"You see 'Jew Couple' as a bar order. I was a little bit shocked," said offended customer Elliot Stein.
Elliot Stein and his girlfriend were the victim of a bartender at a Jersey Shore restaurant when he used the words "Jew Couple" to identify them on their check.
Stein considers the check ''racial profiling''.
The Attorney General's Office Division on Civil Rights has now launched an investigation into Parkhill's Waterfront Grill in Loch Arbour.
"We want to determine what the facts are and see if the conduct violated the law against discrimination," said Peter Harvey the NJ Attorney General.
The restaurant's general manager Malia Wells had this to say about the issue.
"Unfortunately it was poor judgment by our bartender. She apologized. I apologize. It was poor judgment and she is no longer with us."
Despite apologies and firings, the Attorney General wants to look into this case further.
"It certainly isn't in anybody's handwriting which wouldn't suggest the waitress wrote it. It suggests as you pointed out in the software of the restaurant's computer system. It may not be a waitress problem. This may be a management problem, an institutional problem. If so, we intend to correct the institution and not have the institution blame its employees who were trained a certain way." said Harvey.
A restaurant spokesperson told us today that they don't have software in their system that identifies customers by race or religion, and after this incident, table numbers will be used to label customers.
The attorney general says the restaurant could be subject to a fine or forced to re-train its employees if his office determines a civil rights violation.
The Attorney General says his office has not received any other complaints on the restaurant.
