I have to disagree with you, elementary schooling is not sufficient. The program that is in place is atrocious; they are learning the bare bone minimum, IF even that.
You are right, it is difficult to require a ''Masmid'' to give up 2 hours of learning for secular studies, and just as we need professionals, so do we need Dayunim, but not everybody is cut out for that, I would say that most people are not cut out to be Dayunim.
The fact that Bobover's speak with an interesting accent, is that a bad thing? If you're going to speak English, should you not speak it with an accent that is understood to any person?
You will forgive me for saying this, but I have friends from Monroe and other places, that thought that they had a perfect English, until they got into the work environment, as original Yiddish speakers, we tend to roll out 'R's'' and change the ''v's'' to ''w's''.
You are also correct by saying that the Heimishe Oilim can pick up skills by learning gemorah, BUT not necessary reading comprehension.
They are better able to analyze a theory, or understand both sides of an argument, but for proper English comprehension, or reading, you first need to be able to read, and understand what you are reading!
I understand Yiddish B'h, I am a chusid as well, and if you think about it C sharp is also D flat, but thanks for the compliment.
Now let me close by saying,
There are those amongst us that do want to go to college, and do want to become professionals, be it an accountant, lawyer, or surgeon. The opportunities are greater now, but I think not enough.
S'char limid is going up, not down. Rent is going up, not down. The cost of living in general is going up, not down.
I think that the ability to make enough money for all of our expenses, (and they are greater than the average goy) is not available to all that would want it.
