More work is under way at the planned site of a Jewish seminary in Glendale, renewing concerns expressed by neighbors about the year-old project.
Construction workers began excavating a large hole in front of the site of the United Talmudic Seminary's planned two-story yeshiva, located at 74-10 88th Stree,t late last month, renewing concerns from neighbors about the project.
Dorie Figlioli, president of the 74th Street Block Association, said recent work is a concern because neighbors don't know its purpose.
Lack of information has been a persistent complaint about the project since January 2004, when the UTs bought the former Monarch Knitting Machinery Corp. plant.
The UTS is a five-year Hasidic rabbinical seminary based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with an enrollment of 1,640. The school has also operated a yeshiva in Forest Hills since 1999, with an enrollment of 500 students. Seminary officials have said the Forest Hills students would be transferred to the Glendale yeshiva.
They have also said the Glendale yeshiva would initially have about 600 students, all males in their late teens. However, there would be space to accommodate at least 1,000, should enrollment increase.
The plans originally called for sleeping quarters for 100 students, but those were eliminated after the Department of Buildings ruled they would violate zoning regulations.
According to plans submitted by Manhattan-based architect Karl Fischer, a central assembly hall with a capacity of 1,108 is being constructed. The plans also include a cafeteria with a capacity of 531, a library, classrooms, offices and a mikva, which is a ritual bath.
The bulk of the yeshiva students would be bused daily from Williamsburg at 6 a.m. and return home at 10 p.m. Although Yeshiva representatives have said the school would operate eight buses, community leaders say far more would be necessary to accommodate the students.
The potential bus traffic remains a major concern, said Gary Giordano, district manager of Community Board 5. ''One of the big concerns is getting the buses off the street,'' he said.
Giordano said the lot has enough room for off-street bus parking, but that he doesn't know if that is in the plans.
